A 3,000-year-old magic square that Vedic numerologists use to read personality, missing traits and life remedies straight from a birth date. Below: the numbers, the planes that connect them, the five elements, and the remedy for every gap.
The fixed Lo Shu square — every grid, for every birth date, starts from this exact arrangement.
Your personal Lo Shu grid isn't drawn freehand — you place your birth digits onto the fixed square above, then note which numbers repeat and which never appear.
Use the DD-MM-YYYY format and list out every single digit separately, ignoring zeros.
For every digit in your birth date, mark that number's fixed position on the grid above — the same digit appearing twice means that cell is marked twice.
Cells marked more than once are your dominant numbers. Cells with no marks at all are your missing numbers — the ones this guide's remedies address.
23-11-1998 gives digits 2,3,1,1,1,9,9,8 (zeros dropped). Number 1 appears three times, 9 twice, and 2, 3, 8 once each — while 4, 5, 6, 7 are missing from the grid entirely.
Every straight line through the grid — three rows, three columns, two diagonals — is a "plane." When all three numbers on a plane are present in your birth date, that plane is complete and its trait runs strong; when it's broken, that trait needs conscious work.
In Vedic numerology, each Lo Shu number is ruled by a planet and expresses one of the five elements — Panchatattva. A grid heavy in one element runs hot or grounded in a very specific way; a missing element is where the remedies below focus first.
| Number | Planet | Element | What it governs |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sun (Surya) | Fire | Identity, leadership, willpower |
| 2 | Moon (Chandra) | Water | Emotion, intuition, relationships |
| 3 | Jupiter (Guru) | Ether / Space | Wisdom, expansion, teaching |
| 4 | Rahu | Air | Ambition, unconventional drive |
| 5 | Mercury (Budh) | Earth | Communication, business, intellect |
| 6 | Venus (Shukra) | Water | Love, beauty, comfort |
| 7 | Ketu | Water | Spirituality, introspection |
| 8 | Saturn (Shani) | Air | Discipline, career, justice |
| 9 | Mars (Mangal) | Fire | Courage, energy, action |
Planet and element assignments follow the Vedic Lo Shu tradition; some numerologists use slightly different groupings, so treat this as one consistent, widely-taught reference rather than a universal fixed law.
Read the card for each digit in your grid. If a number appears twice or more, lean into its "when strong" trait — and watch the excess note if it appears four or more times. If a number never appears, its remedy is where to start.
The Lo Shu square is also the base of Vastu's directional compass — each number owns a compass direction. These are the directions to favour (for sleeping, seating, or placing a remedy) for that number's energy.
Independent of your Lo Shu numbers, Vastu assigns every one of the eight directions plus the centre a ruling force and a life area. This is the base layer the number-specific remedies above sit on top of.
Career flow and income. Keep open, uncluttered, and lightly furnished.
Spirituality and clarity. The most sacred zone — ideal for prayer, meditation, or a water feature.
Health, new beginnings and social growth. Best kept open to catch the morning sun.
Wealth and energy consumption. The natural home for the kitchen or electrical fittings.
Fame, recognition and discipline. Suits heavier furniture and solid, grounding decor.
Relationships and stability. The strongest, heaviest corner — ideal for the master bedroom.
Gains, savings and social standing. Well suited to dining spaces or children's rooms.
Support, networking and helpful people. Good for guest rooms, storage, or a study.
The energetic core of the home. Must stay open, light, and free of pillars or clutter.
Separate from the Lo Shu grid but often read alongside it, your Kua number is a Feng Shui figure calculated from birth year and gender. It sorts everyone into an East or West life group and points to four auspicious and four inauspicious compass directions personal to you.
Kua 1, 3, 4, 9. Best supported by East, Southeast, North and South — the same directions as the East-group Lo Shu planes above.
Kua 2, 5, 6, 7, 8. Best supported by West, Northwest, Southwest and Northeast.
Beyond the number-specific remedies above, most Lo Shu correction work falls into four broad categories. Combine one or two per missing number rather than all at once.
This guide reflects traditional Vedic Lo Shu numerology, shared for cultural and self-reflective interest. It isn't a substitute for professional medical, legal, or financial advice — and gemstone or planetary remedies should only be taken up after consulting a qualified practitioner.
